Waste disposal is depositing waste. Methods
of waste disposal vary according to the
materials in the waste and include
incineration, burial at designated sites, and
dumping at sea. Organic waste can be treated
and reused as fertilizer. Nuclear waste and
toxic waste is usually buried or dumped at
sea, although this does not negate the
danger. Waste disposal is an increasing
problem in the late 20th century.
Environmental groups, such as Greenpeace and
Friends of the Earth, are campaigning for
more recycling, a change in lifestyle so that
less waste (from packaging and containers to
nuclear materials) is produced, and safer
methods of disposal. Although incineration is
a less messy way of geeting rid of waste, it
causes air pollution, and harms the ozone
layer.
